Three creative paths, one goal. Studio One is your creative companion from start to finish. The Start page provides what you need to kickstart your creative process—open projects, set parameters, and check for updates and tips. From there, the Song page is all about recording, arranging, editing, and mixing your music with a complete set of virtual instruments, effects, and groundbreaking arrangement tools. Then, assemble and master your music in the Project page. Even better, the Project and Song pages are linked so if you need just that one little change in your master or stems, switch to the Song page, tweak, and mix back automatically to the Project. No other program accomplishes such an effortless transition as you move from the initial creative inspiration to the finished, mastered production.
Arranging at the speed of click. Forget laborious transposition, cutting, pasting, and moving when arranging. With Scratch Pads to test out arrangements, an Arranger track that makes moving sections of songs around as easy as moving parts, and the groundbreaking Harmonic Editing—the most flexible chord track implementation ever—no other program can approach the ease of arranging and songwriting that Studio One 4 delivers.
- We know that creating music is a dynamic, living process. Arrangements change, chords shuffle. Space opens up for solos or closes to tighten up the song. Inspiration strikes in the middle of the night, and your creativity pursues an entirely new direction. It’s all part of the art of songwriting and composition, and Studio One is your creative companion during this process. The Arrangement track is a simple, intuitive way to move around song sections. Try out different arrangements, swap sections, lengthen or shorten solos, and structure a song exactly the way you want. Arranging has also been enhanced with ripple editing, a technique borrowed from the world of video editing. When you insert a new section in the middle of a song, Studio One automatically inserts space for the new material and then closes up the arrangement around it. And when you cut out a section of a song, you don’t need to cut, copy, and paste; delete the region, and Studio One closes up the cut portion automatically. This isn’t just about the time you save but about a smoother, more accurate workflow.
- Of course, Studio One also pioneered Scratch Pads so you could test changes without disturbing your existing arrangement or song tracks. With Studio One 4, songwriting and arranging reach a higher level with yet another Studio One first: Harmonic Editing. Go ahead… insert an instrument and start playing. When you come up with something you like, drag it to the Chord Track, which automatically detects and shows the chords you played. Now you can have subsequent parts conform to the Chord Track or change the Chord Track at any time; the rest of the arrangement follows these changes. Drag chords around. Substitute chords to see if they sound better. Split off an independent bass note from chords. Export chords to Notion 6.4 for effortless lead-sheet creation and printing. Even use Harmonic Editing to smash creative blocks and inspire you with new ideas. What’s more, the Chord Track works with audio tracks as well as with instrument tracks. It has never been easier to “prototype” a song so quickly and simply—and keep your creative spark alive. Harmonic Editing opens up the world of harmony and chord structures not just to composers but to all musicians. Whether you’re writing your first song or doing orchestral scoring for film, once you use Harmonic Editing you’ll wonder how you got along without it.
Another Studio One first: Harmonic Editing. Far more than just a simple chord track for note data, Studio One 4’s Chord Track is a songwriter’s dream come true. Create and change chord progressions, try out chord substitutions, substitute rich chords for simple ones, even have older parts follow a new, better chord structure you came up with thanks to the inspiration Harmonic Editing can provide. This breakthrough, which works with instruments and even audio tracks, underscores Studio One’s commitment to streamline the songwriting and music creation process.
Detect chords automatically. When you come up with an inspired chord progression, you needn’t put your creativity on hold while you figure out what you played in order to add new parts. Built-in chord detection extracts chords from audio or instrument tracks—simply drag a part to the Chord Track to create a reference for Harmonic Editing.
Overcome creative blocks. When you’re stuck in a rut, let Studio One Professional be your creative partner. Use the ingenious Chord Selector to experiment easily with new chord patterns and ideas. Let Harmonic Editing spark new ideas. Change chords in real time from an external MIDI controller to try out chord progressions on the fly. Transfer chord data from an audio or instrument track to the Chord Track, or from the Chord Track to other tracks.
Pipeline XT: Plug-in integration for external processors. Studio One Professional’s unique Pipeline XT plug-in lets you insert hardware processors into your Studio One session with automatic latency compensation, enabling you to easily mix and match your favorite plug-ins with your hardware processors. Once inserted, Pipeline (and the hardware processor to which it’s connected) functions like any other plug-in inside your Studio One session.
- Pipeline XT makes it easy to integrate hardware processors with plug-ins, managing the signal flow to and from the external processor. Simply click the Auto button after setting up the send and return connections, and the latency will be measured and compensated automatically. You can then use the Offset parameter to make manual adjustments, up to a maximum of 32,000 samples.
- Although Pipeline XT is a stereo plug-in, it supports mono sends without losing a second hardware output—perfect for use with mono-in / stereo-out processors. A note pad lets you add text notes to your presets to document specific setup instructions and parameter settings for your hardware processor. You can even take a snapshot of your hardware processor and drag it into the Pipeline XT center display to capture hardware settings for later manual recall. Click on the image to expand it to full size and switch between image view, ping view, and oscilloscope. Background colors, device names, custom images, and text notes are all saved with your Pipeline XT presets.
Printable notation that’s truly noteworthy. With just a few clicks and Notion 6.4 or higher, Harmonic Editing makes it easy to create great-looking, printable lead sheets.
MIDI—and beyond MIDI. Studio One works with all the standard MIDI gear you know and love, from controllers to tone modules. But once MIDI data arrives into Studio One, it’s converted to a high-resolution, 32-bit internal format. That means no zipper noise on instruments, smoother controller changes and pitch bends, more detailed automation, and other benefits when working in the Studio One environment. And if you need to drive external MIDI gear, you’re covered there too—Studio One translates its high-resolution format back into standard MIDI data if it needs to return to the outside world.
World-class instruments. With its rich roster of native plug-ins, Studio One has earned its reputation as a complete production package—and now our latest generation of virtual instruments, based on input from the Studio One community (thank you), deliver even more. Impact has been remade into Impact XT, a comprehensive beat and rhythm production environment. Sample One XT samples, slices, and dices to create great beats and realistic instrument sounds. These new instruments don’t feel like separate plug-ins but like integrated—and integral—parts of music creation.
Impact XT: Heat up the beat. Fully backward compatible with Impact, the XT version adds more than 20 new, highly requested features and improvements. You can even create complete arrangements in a single instance of Impact XT by launching loops that sync to your Song with real-time stretching, beat quantization, and synched start/stop.
Impact XT reinvents the concept of a “drum module” to create a comprehensive environment for creating, playing, and composing with loops and beats. Even a single instance can be enough to power a complete song arrangement, not just because of the looping capabilities but also because there are eight banks of pads, so you can switch easily among multiple setups. And, Impact XT integrates with the new Patterns, from auto-populating Patterns with named instruments for instant beat creation, to driving loops as well as one-shot sounds from Patterns. Here are some other highlights of this mighty module.
- Fabulous filtering. Get nasty with drive and punch controls, soft clipping, and a new 24 dB/octave zero-delay feedback filter.
- Excellent editing. Reverse, normalize, stack, drag-and-drop, stretch, edit pads or individual samples within the pads, go crazy with the eight-octave pitch envelope range, and more.
- Timely triggers. Load loops on pads, then trigger them, quantize triggers to the beat, and stretch loops in real time to follow the tempo. All of this makes Impact XT a complete loop production station, as well as a superior drum and beats instrument.
- Play out. Impact XT offers 32 outputs—16 stereo and 16 mono—for complete processing flexibility. There are also 32 mute groups (choke groups).
- Plays well with others. Swap samples with Sample One XT and Presence XT, import and export multisample files as well as .soundx containers, optionally auto-slice files into samples on import, integrate with the new Patterns, and speed workflow with the “Send to new Impact” shortcut.
Sample One XT: Because samplers should sample. Sample One XT has expanded from sample playback into a sampling powerhouse. Sample, auto-slice, stretch, process, trigger, and deconstruct audio (sampled from inputs or imported from a track) for breathtaking freedom in constructing powerful new performances and beats.
For too many programs, “sampler” means “sample playback.” But not with Studio One, which recognizes that sampling is a crucial part of modern music production. Sample One XT has the editing features you’d normally associate with standalone hardware or software samplers but goes one step further with integration into Studio One’s workflow. Drag-and-drop samples between Sample One XT and Impact XT, record samples from almost anywhere in the program, and talk to the outside world with import/export of multisample files and .soundx containers.
- The world is your waveform. A recording page for live sampling captures audio from any hardware input, bus, output, or other instrument.
- Yes, it’s really a sampler. Crossfade and trim samples, slice samples automatically with adjustable gate, snap to zero crossings, stretch timing to match song tempo, slice and reverse waveforms, and more. Edit samples globally, or on a per-waveform basis. Trigger samples with normal, one-shot, or toggle modes… it’s all here.
- Let your samples get looped. Choose from three sample loop modes: sample sustain, release, and forward/backward (“ping-pong”) to extend sample length and playability —or to create goofy stuttering effects, if that’s your thing.
- Oh… and it’s a synth, too. The new filter has the same punch, drive, and clip options as Impact XT. Apply graphic synth envelopes with adjustable attack, decay, and release curve shapes to control dynamics and filtering. Take advantage of the eight-octave pitch envelope range. There’s even a random LFO mode for sample-and-hold effects and a complete effects section with modulation, delay, reverb, gate, EQ, distortion, and panning. The difference between “sample playback” and “sampler” is huge, as you’ll find out when you start playing with all of Sample One XT’s new features.
Beat the clock. Studio One 4 isn’t just about including a world-class drum instrument but also integrating it with an innovative, streamlined Drum Editor to edit drum parts as fast as you can think. Along with hundreds of preconfigured pitch name and mapping scripts available for free from PreSonus Exchange, the new Drum Editor is like an accelerator for drum editing.
Patterns—a giant step forward. The step sequencer has served us well for over half a century; now it’s time for Studio One’s new Patterns to step into the future. Tight integration with instrument parts, automation, and Impact XT means that Patterns reinvent step sequencing as a seamless, fast, fun part of making music.
From dumb machine to drum machine—and more. Patterns transform step sequencing from mechanical repetition into a truly expressive addition to modern sequencing. Yes, Patterns are about drums… but also melodies, integration with any instrument, step-based automation, variable sequence lengths (polyrhythms, anyone?), unlimited variations, and more.
Extra functions. No extra complications. Impact XT’s integration with Patterns will change how you think about drum programming because the combination makes beat creation fast, fun, and effortless. There’s no need for a separate plug-in or track type to do pattern-based sequencing because Patterns work side-by-side with conventional Instrument parts on the same track. You can choose, rename, copy, and reorder an unlimited number of Pattern variations from within the Arrangement—you don’t even need to open the Pattern Editor. And, there’s a new library of inspirational drum Patterns and Variations Patterns in the Musicloops format for easy, drag-and-drop saving and export.
- From the first 8-step analog version, step sequencers have helped put the “electronic” in electronic music. But software versions haven’t kept pace—until now. Step sequencers have traditionally been separate programs or windows within a host, but Studio One takes a fresh approach where step sequencing becomes another type of part, like note events and audio, and is equally easy to edit. Another important aspect is integration with Impact XT, which auto-populates Patterns with named instruments. Forget about the tedious process of mapping notes to pads—just load and go.
- Even better, Patterns are very much like playable, real-time instruments. You can change multiple parameters on a per-step basis—including 10 levels of repeat for “stutter” effects, a probability algorithm that adds variety by selectively dropping out notes, and automation lanes. Vary automation parameters in real time for the instrument being driven by the Pattern and tweak while playing until it sounds just the way you want. Once the pattern is complete, click and drag the Pattern’s edge to extend the Pattern for as long as you want within a track. And if you’re not really into step sequencers... no worries. You have Patterns now.
Master mastering. Studio One Professional is the only program that links songs and stems with finished, mixed Projects. Transfer mixes or mixed stems to the Project page for mastering—but if you hear anything you need to change, simply jump back into the Song, make your tweaks, and then mix the revised version back automatically into the Project page to continue mastering. Whether for Red Book-compatible CD burning, digital publishing for streaming, creating DJ sets and playlists, or professional-level DDP import/export for duplicators, the Song page/Project page partnership makes it easy to obtain consistent levels and tonal balance with collections of songs.
Processors for the mastering process. Sweeten your project and prepare it for prime time—Studio One 4’s professional mastering features include sophisticated equalization, limiting, industry-standard metering, spectrum analysis, and analytic plug-ins to help add the all-important final touches to your music. Apply processing to individual tracks, or the entire collection, to take your mixes to the next level.
Pick a format… any format. Prepare your tracks for streaming with data compressed, standard, or lossless files. AAF (Advanced Authoring Format) provides song/session exchange for those who haven’t switched to Studio One (yet). Open all video and audio formats your operating system supports. Enjoy better video performance with 64-bit video engines for macOS and Windows. Create disk images. Burn Red Book CDs. Import DDP files for editing, such as fixing ID tags or ISRC code errors, then export the corrected DDP file. Whether your music’s final destination is online streaming or physical media, Studio One Professional has you covered.
Breaking News: ARA 2.0 is coming. Deep support for the new Audio Random Access 2.0 spec opens Studio One 4’s groundbreaking Harmonic Editing to other plug-in and virtual instrument developers (expect a free Melodyne update with Chord Track support later this year), and allows simultaneous editing of multiple tracks.
